Salvation & Discipleship Distinguished, But Not Separated
Salvation Is God's Free Gift
Salvation is received by grace through faith.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Ephesians 2:8–9
Salvation is based entirely upon the finished work of Jesus Christ.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16
The believer is justified—declared righteous before God—through faith.
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
Romans 5:1
The believer possesses everlasting life and is no longer under condemnation.
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
John 5:24
Discipleship Is Following Christ
A disciple continues faithfully in the Word of Christ.
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;”
John 8:31
Discipleship requires daily self-denial and submission to Christ.
“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
Luke 9:23
A disciple follows Christ’s example by serving others.
“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:45
A disciple grows spiritually and becomes increasingly like Christ.
“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”

The Proper Relationship
Saved By Grace Through Faith
Salvation is not earned through obedience, personal sacrifice, baptism, church attendance, religious service, or good works.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Ephesians 2:8–9
Created Unto Good Works
Good works are not the cause of salvation. They are the purpose and expected fruit of the new life God gives.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10
Saved According To God's Mercy
Salvation does not come through righteous deeds performed by the sinner.
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
Titus 3:5
True Faith Is Living Faith
Good works do not purchase salvation, but genuine saving faith does not remain fruitless.
“Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.”
James 2:17
James is not teaching that works earn eternal life. He is teaching that genuine faith produces visible evidence in the believer’s life.
Biblical Balance
Salvation and discipleship must be carefully distinguished, but they should never be completely separated.
Salvation is God’s free gift, received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
Discipleship is the believer’s continuing life of learning, obedience, service, sacrifice, and spiritual growth.
⚠ We are not saved by good works, but we are saved unto good works.
Not By Works, But Unto Good Works
- Saved by His grace.
- Saved through faith.
- Saved to follow Christ.
- Saved to serve Him.
- Saved to glorify Him.
